Lauren Luke has become a bit of YouTube sensation for her make-up tutorials, but now she has really created a stir thanks to her latest video. Her new tutorial, simply titled 'How to look your best the morning after', shows a bruised and battered Lauren applying make-up to her injuries caused by domestic violence. The video shocked her 440,000 subscribers and is continuing to make waves, but thankfully the instructional vid is not real – it is part of a campaign for the anti-domestic-violence group, Refuge.
The campaign, 'Don't Cover It Up', focuses on the fact that 65% of women that suffer from domestic violence keep it hidden. Lauren provides a step-by-step guide as she goes through the process of covering up her bruises and cuts left by a "jealous type of partner". The video ends abruptly after a sound in the hall causes Lauren to stop filming the tutorial, followed by Refuge's message.
The Green Room Verdict: This is the latest in a trend of YouTube make-up artists starring in awareness campaigns, and is in fact very similar to one Nikkie de Jager of NikkieTutorials did. Her video was another faux-tutorial that highlighted the danger of putting make-up on while behind the wheel – a shocking video that is also worth a watch. These tutorials are a clever way of gaining audience attention without seeming like 'just another ad' and causing viewers to switch off.
