It's that time again – the time when New Zealand becomes Middle Earth. We know that the Lord of the Rings movies gave New Zealand a big boost in tourism, so the new Hobbit film is sure to to do the same. Air New Zealand is often a first port of call for these incoming travelers, and they're embracing this fact with their new safety video inspired by the Hobbit (featuring cast and crew alike). We love that something as bland as an in-flight safety video can be so captivating! Check out 'An Unexpected Briefing' below.
Featuring cameos by Gollum, Dwarf Fili (actor Dean O'Corman), J.R.R. Tolkien's great grandsons and even director Sir Peter Jackson, this in-flight video has won the hearts of people all over the world, garnering one million YouTube views on the day it launched. This isn't the first time that Air New Zealand's in-flight safety videos have had a little fun – let's not forget the 'Fit to Fly' vid featuring Richard Simmons, or the scantily clad 'Bare Essentials of Safety'!
The Green Room Verdict: After just four days in action, the clip has clocked over six million YouTube views and has featured in international media such as CNN, the Sydney Morning Herald, the Telegraph and Wall Street Journal. The clip is a win-win for all parties involved. As Air New Zealand international marketing chief Jodi Williams said, the video has been "fantastic for growing global awareness of the forthcoming movie, Air New Zealand's brand and New Zealand as a destination." In-flight videos have been taken to a whole new level – I'm sure we're not alone in wondering what kind of creativity Air New Zealand will inject into the next one.
