Get in the cockpit and track flights in real time

What began as a hobby project for two aviation geeks in 2006 has now become a website that receives more than 10 million visits a month – and we can see why. Flightradar24 is a service that tracks flights going all over the world in real time. When you tune in to the web version, you get an idea of how busy the sky is. But that's not all. Clicking on each airplane icon gives detailed information about the craft such as the flight number, destination, origin, speed, altitude, aircraft type and more. We spotted one leaving for Fiji from Auckland just half an hour ago, and yes, we may have wished we were on it (it's cold today, okay?).

While the basic Flightradar24 service is pretty neat (go and compare the flights around New Zealand to Europe!), there is a another feature that needs a mention. Thanks to Google Earth you can put yourself in the cockpit of your selected plane and see for yourself what the view would be like. You can even switch to an exterior view to watch the plane as it sails the skies.

The Green Room Verdict: A neat idea that would be a bit of fun when you've got someone specific to track… such as the Malaysian Prime Minister, who was snapped flying to Italy on a private trip. There are even mobile versions of Flightradar24 which apparently include an augmented reality feature, allowing you to point your phone at any given plane in the sky to pick up information on it.
