It's summer time in Canada… and while a beach party featuring DJs, hula hooping, limbo contests and giveaways sound like a recipe for fun, it's also the kind of event where you'd get very, very thirsty. McDonalds decided to join in the fun by promoting their Dollar Drink Days campaign. They placed a large ice sculpture embedded with dollar coins in the event area, where people could chip out treasure for a cool beverage.
The 8,000 pound, seven-foot tall installation was placed at the Sylvan Lake event with the message "cool off with $1 drinks" frozen in the ice. Over 4,000 dollar coins were shaped into McDonald's famous Golden Arches for consumers to chip into. Not surprisingly, the sculpture only lasted five hours before it was completely looted.
The Green Room Verdict: A very 'cool' idea coming from Cossette in Vancouver, it's another in a stream of fun interactive promotions that McDonald's has hosted (anyone remember their smartphone 'Pick n Play' campaign?). Initially we wondered how many people would keep chipping and hoarding the coins for themselves, but the slow nature of the process would deter hanger-ons. Not sure how many would spend their dollar at a McDonald's when they are at an event with other things to spend money on… though that may depend on how close the nearest McDonald's was.
