Reconstructed ruins serve as a reminder

On a similar vein to the Donate a Plate campaign, this art installation brought the cruel effects of a natural disaster to the front of viewers minds, encouraging them to help the situation. This recreation of the 2006 Sidoarjo mud flow was constructed directly in front of the Indonesian Presidential Palace, where buildings, houses and public facilities appeared to be submerged in the ground.

Recreated by a mining advocacy network in Indonesia, the installation remembered the 10,000+ houses and public facilities that were lost in a controversial mud volcano eruption. An earthquake that occurred close to an active gas drilling site triggered the mud volcano. On the anniversary of the event, actors place themselves around the reconstructed ruins to demonstrate the tragedy's effect on life in the area. A message accompanied the installation saying “bangu korban Lapindo Sidoarjo bangun hidupnya kembali” (help the victims of Sidoarjo mud-flow to build their life back).

The Green Room Verdict: A touching piece, the installation brought the tragedy back to life, enabling onlookers to understand the event's magnitude. We like the simple use of carefully cut props to convincingly retell the Sidoarjo story with an eerie silence. This campaign won Gold at the Spikes Asia Awards and a Silver Outdoor Lion at Cannes.
