Live large on Thursday

How dramatically would your life change if you won the 'Big Wednesday' jackpot? You may have seen this commercial gracing New Zealand television screens lately. Using a split screen, this ad for Big Wednesday illustrates a day in the life of an average Joe before and after winning big. This style of advertising has been a really effective strategy for NZ Lotteries (check out the Wilson ads if you haven't seen them already), and this is one of the biggest and best along that vein!

The big budget ad by agency DDB NZ took 11 days to shoot, with other 15 second commercials also being being filmed for release later. It shows the winning Lotto lifestyle – being able to buy or do whatever you want, no matter how ridiculous. "Big Wednesday has traditionally been quite a retail focused campaign in terms of prizes," DDB's executive creative director Toby Talbot said. "It's nice to have some storytelling and intrigue involved. Hopefully people keep coming back to the ad and finding something new".

The Green Room Verdict: The split screen technique is a simple but effective way of contrasting the banal Wednesday to the Thursday full of big spending. The charm of these ads are enough to make anyone smile – we identify with the anti-hero whose dreams have all come true, and hope that next time it will be us.
