Here's a novel idea for when you're on the fence about buying a product. Often the ability to see the actual item and how it works can make or break your purchase decision, but packaging prevents this. Bandai have released a way for children and adults alike to view their toys without taking them out of their box… with a little help of a certain reality augmentation app.
The partnership between Bandai and Aurasma, the world's leading augmented reality platform, lets kids interact with their favourite toys such as Ben10, Power Rangers and ThunderCats. Simply pointing a camera of an Aurasma-enabled smartphone at a special edition Bandai toy box brings the toy character magically to 3D life.
With the toy's logo acting as a "trigger image", the Managing DIrector of Aurasma comments that the packaging will become and essential part of the toy's experience. "Parents will now have to remember not to throw away the packaging," Martina King says, "[it will be] something kids keep returning to."
The Green Room Verdict: This 21st century toy experience isn't just a thrill for children, as adults who like to collect the figurines (who keep the toys strictly sealed in their packaging) are also making happy noises – this is, for them, the closest to being able to have their cake and eat it too. While the technology isn't new, the ability to view products out of their box in a 3D way is one that is sure to catch on.
