A little village goes global

Have you heard of the tiny Swiss village of Obermutten? Here's a brief rundown of this sleepy town: it has less than 100 residents, a hotel, a barn, a church… and a Facebook page with higher engagement rates than the pages of Lady Gaga and Coca Cola. Yes, you read it right. Their campaign was simple: just become a fan of their Facebook page and they'll print out your profile picture and pin it to their town noticeboard. But with nearly 14,000 fans, these pictures have spread to the barn door and other areas of the village, as the mayor will not back down on his charming promise.

The novelty of appearing on a noticeboard in rural Sweden is a pretty attractive hook, but the popularity of the page also comes down to the adorable honesty of the town. The town shares quaint snippets of life in Obermutten, including a post about the town dog, a photo of the poster the school children made, and a video of the heavy fog the town had one day. The mayor's daughter even knitted a personalized scarf as a prize for the Facebook page's competition.

The Green Room Verdict: After two months of this popular campaign, sixty million people around the world had heard of Obermutten from every continent in the world. What's more, the 10,000 Swiss francs spent on the idea has reportedly brought in earned media of over 2.4 million francs – not to mention what the tourists will be bringing in, with hundreds visiting the town and hundreds more planning to visit. Could it be time for Obermutten to build hotel number 2? For your chance to win a scarf knitted by the mayor's daughter, visit the Obermutten Facebook page.
