We can see right through one of Samsung's latest innovations – and we like the view

Samsung has recently announced the mass production of their slick transparent LCD display (22-inch, available in black, white and colour). The transparent display, which allows you to see through it like glass, is the first to attain such a high level of transparency using an LCD screen.

A senior vice president of Samsung Electronics LCD Business, Younghwan Park, comments that "transparent displays will have a wide range of use in all industry areas as an efficient tool for delivering information and communication". The display will quickly prove its worth as an advertising tool (think shop windows and showcase events), and interest has been expressed in using the screen at home. But Samsung has already thought of more interactive ways of using the product – like 'REAL Translator' concept, where you can hold the device up to your friend as it translates their speech in real time.

The Green Room Verdict: It'll only be a matter of time before transparent LCD screens are seen (or rather, seen through) everywhere. We like the idea of instore TV displays not blocking line-of-sight for added security, or being able to hang a picture behind the TV at home for when it isn't in use. But later down the track, what about GPS services displayed on the windscreen of your car, or when touch-screen capability comes about (which it probably will), checking a clothing catalogue outside the store? Whatever it gets used for, we're sure all applications screen will come with a rather hefty price tag.
